Australia Day 2012 Jan 1st or 26th?

The Australia Day national holiday on the 26th of January only started to be celebrated nationally from 1935 and not until 1994 consistently as a public holiday on that date. The challenge of making the 26th of January a day all Australians can accept and enjoy is the fact that the 26th of January originated to mark the beginning of British occupation of Australia by British pioneering settlers, symbolised by the raising of the Union Jack and later the Australian flag which bears the British flag. This gives rise to Aboriginal Australians referring to it as 'invasion day'. Maybe the same spirit of the current Australia day could be achieved by changing it to January 1st and focus more on celebrating Federation, when Australia became an independent nation on 1st January 1901. Anyway happy Australia Day.

We took the ute on a 4x4 trek today. We went from Redbank to the town of Moonambel via The St Arnaud Range National Park and the Redbank Nature Conservation Reserve. Moonambel is situated in a sheltered valley in the heart of the Victorian Pyrenees. Victoria's Pyrenees District is a wine region centred on the Pyrenees ranges located in Victoria, Australia near the town of Avoca. See our track mapped here on the MotionX-GPS site. I use MotionX-GPS on the iPhone.

A. under your buccan hat. Our Elephant Ear plant is flowering, a rare event by all accounts. Must be the master gardener at work. Alocasia is a genus of broad leaved tuberous perennials from the Family Araceae. There are 78 species normally occurring in Tropical or Subtropical Asia and Australia. I think this one is a Alocasia brisbanensis. its common name is native lily or cunjevoi and has large, spade shaped leaves on long, fleshy stems. The flowers are a perfumed, greenish-cream colour that is similar to an arum lily. Red fruits follow the flowering. We will see.

Flinders Ranges Part III

On the first section of Sky Trek, as mentioned in Flinders Ranges Part II, all you really need is the ground clearance of a 4WD. That is until you start ascending the mountain range where you need a proper 4WD with low range to tackle as the terrain is very steep in places. Sky Trek is a 60km loop where you will find yourself using low range more often than not in the final 30km as you traverse up and down the ranges. In terms of scenery and some of the best 4WD driving the Flinders Ranges ranks right up there with some of the best 4WD destinations in the country and Sky Trek is the most famous of several private property tracks that will get you views and experiences you will not get in the National Park alone. From the top of Mount Caernarvon Trig Point you get the best perspective of the Flinders Ranges and an almost birds eye view of Wilpena Pound from this vantage point.

Flinders Ranges Part II

Skytrek is a 4WD self drive tour on Willow Springs Station Flinders Ranges in South Australia. Willow Springs Station is located around 450km north of Adelaide, or just over 1000km from Bendigo Victoria. This trek takes approximately 6 hours and is an exhilarating 4WD experience that takes you up to Mount Caernarvon, at 921 Metres its the highest points of vehicle access in the Flinders Ranges. The track starts fairly sedately through huge Red River Gum lined creek beds, aboriginal etchings, groves of native pines and black oak and bluebush plains in the mountain valleys. There are plenty of historic points of interest along the way like windmills, mustering yards and an old shepherd's hut.

Flinders Ranges Part I

The Flinders Ranges and Wilpena Pound are located in South Australia around 450km north of Adelaide, or just over 1000km from Bendigo Victoria. The first day here we went to see the ranges from Moralana Scenic Road. A 130km round trip from Hawker up the Wilpena (Binman) Rd to the Moralana track, an easy outback red dust track except for some creek crossings. It skirts along the South and West side of Wilpena Pound across to Barndioota (Parachilna) Rd where we circled back to Hawker.

Millewa Community Pioneer Park in Meringur

On the way to the Flinders Ranges we stopped at Meringur, a farming settlement to the west of Mildura. It is located at the end of the Red Cliffs-Meringur Road towards the South Australian border. Meringur has a population of 20 and the only business still operating is the Meringur Post Office. While in Meringur we visited the Millewa Pioneer Forest and Historical Village open air museum. The Pioneer Village which has many original buildings and artefacts from the Millewa pioneers. Well worth a trip to see. We found the original Werrimull Railway Station building where my Mum actually worked as the Station Mistress for a short time in 1955 when Dad was a Ganger on the Victorian Railways and he was based in Werrimull, a few Kms East of Meringur.

Dog Proof Fence

Heading to the Flinders Ranges in South Australia we stopped briefly at Wycheproof, a small regional town in the centre of the Shire of Buloke, in North Western Victoria. Mount Wycheproof is a mountain located in the town. Standing at 43 metres (141 ft) above the surrounding terrain, Mount Wycheproof has the distinction of being the smallest registered mountain in the world.

43 Kms further North West on the Calder Highway, near Culgoa is a historic marker for the dog proof fence (Click text to view in Google Maps) This marks the site of the dog netting fence which crossed the highway at this point. Part of the fence is included with the memorial. The fence stretched approximately 325 kilometres from Tyntynder on the Murray River to the South Australian border and was intended to prevent wild dogs and other vermin entering farmlands to the south.

Whroo Historic Reserve is on 500 hectares near Rushworth in Victoria and contains the Whroo township an old gold mining ghost town in the Whroo goldfields. The town once had over 140 buildings and a cemetery on Spring Hill near the town site. The last resident of the town left in the early 1960s. Mine shafts dot the area and the Balaclava open cut mine has a mine tunnel running through Balaclava hill into its centre.

Victorian Desert Tracks I

Wyperfeld National Park is open plains and mallee eucalypts, with a usually dry Outlet Creek through the middle that has flowed three times in the last 100 years. Outlet Creek is the overflow from Lake Albacutya and runs through the park and linking a series of lakes (also usually dry). Some of the 4x4 tracks that wind through what is classed as 'remote wilderness'. I entered from the Patchewollock eastern side and only ran down from Yarto (-35.498832,142.272091) to Dattuck Road (-35.588033,142.385881) partial track logged *here* in the park.

Grampians

The Grampians National Park is a striking sandstone mountain range that was listed on the Australian National Heritage List on 15 December 2006 for its outstanding natural beauty and being one of the richest indigenous rock art sites in south-eastern Australia. The main tourist town is Halls Gap and the whole area has an uncanny resemblance to the Mount Tamborine area of Qld in respect to its tourist focus and look and feel.

A closer look at the water shows a beautiful effect on the lake surface from algae, blue green algae occur naturally in marine waters, rivers, lakes, damp soil, tree trunks, hot springs and snow. Despite their name, blue green algae are actually types of bacteria known as Cyanobacteria.

4x4 Equipped

A new member of the family arrived last week, the Isuzu D-Max 4x4 Crew Cab Ute. Just the thing for towing the boat to remote fishing, camping and 4WD tracks and locations that should give me some great opportunities for some photography. I immediately took her, 'Max' out to the Huntly Clay Pits. Its a spot where the local 4x4 club conducts driver training, so there are quite a few setups in one small area to test the ute out on. It took me two hours to get the mud off.

Bendigo National Swap Meet

The annual Swap Meet has been held in Bendigo since 1975, run by the Veteran Vintage & Classic Club Bendigo. Held in November each year it now has over 1,600 sites and attracts in excess of 20,000 people over the weekend and is known worldwide.

Mount Alexander

Mount Alexander is approximately 125 km north-west of Melbourne and 40Km south-east of Bendigo, near the town of Harcourt. Mount Alexander rises 744 metres above sea level and its name is associated with the surrounding district known as the the Shire of Mount Alexander, centred on Castlemaine. The mountain is included within the boundaries of the Mount Alexander Regional Park.

Large scale quarrying of granite in the Mt Alexander area started in 1859 with stone supplied to the Melbourne to Echuca Railway. From the late 1880s Mt Alexander granite was used extensively on prestigious buildings in the centre of Melbourne includeing the Burke and Wills Memorial in the Melbourne General Cemetery (1864), the Princes Bridge (1888), Block Arcade (1892), Flinders Street Station (1910) and the former National Bank of Australasia Head Office Collins Street (1927)

The presence of flaws meant that there was considerable waste which is why there are many pieces apparently abandoned. The peak for this area's quarries was in the 1910s due to the increasing popularity of the stone for monumental work in cemeteries. With the use of stone in major buildings declining in the 1950s, the monumental use kept the quarries ticking along.

A dry stone wall forms my front yards fence. This wall also runs for about 1000 metres around the street block, forming a 80,000 square metre or 8 hectare compound. Shown on the map below. There appears to be two houses, that appear to at least partially be original dwellings. The houses are surrounded by an extension of this wall to form yards that separate them from the compound.

Dry stone walling emerged in Australia in the mid 1800's in areas where a proliferation of stone in the landscape was the result of land clearing. In the case of Bendigo this activity seems to have coincided with the Gold Rush that started in the 1850's. There would have been lots of stone available from the diggings and many Anglo Celtic and European migrants for whom stone walls were historically and culturally significant in our early settlement. This availability of relatively cheap skilled immigrant labour and maybe the need to protect crops from rabbit plagues necessitated the building of these walls.

Local gossip has it that this area was the site of the first Cobb & Co station in Sandhurst (renamed to Bendigo). Later the main settlement moved down to its present central location as the Bendigo Creek was a more reliable water source than the nearby Spring Gully Creek. It is said that the settlement included a walled orchard and market garden and this wall is what remains, sometimes fully and sometimes partly around the perimeter.

This broken section below shows the method called 'Hearting' where small stones and clay are used as filling or packing inside the two external walls. These “Double” walled constructions are made by placing two rows of stones along the boundary to be walled. The rows are composed of large flattish stones. The walls are built up to the desired height layer-by-layer (course by course), and at intervals, 'Throughstones' where heavy, large stones placed at regular intervals along the wall to tie the two sides together. These have the effect of bonding what would otherwise be two thin walls leaning against each other, together with 'Hearting, greatly increasing the strength of the wall and give the wall its A shape side on. It appears that the easier availability of wire and higher wages resulted in a decline in full construction of stone walls after the 1880’s.

Kooyoora

Kooyoora State Park is located 46 kilometres northwest of Bendigo, and 12km west of Inglewood, Victoria, Australia. Its a 11,350 hectare reserve comprising Box-Ironbark forest and rocky granite outcrops including Melville Caves. Not really caves but fissures that have appeared when the weathered granite split to create cave like openings. The bushranger, Captain Melville is believed to have used the area as a hideout.

Lake Hindmarsh, Wimmera

This weekend I took a quick camping and fishing trip to Lake Hindmarsh near the Wimmera town of Jeparit in North Western Victoria. It is about 4 and a half hours drive from Melbourne. Famous for its Yabbies, Freshwater Catfish and Redfin, this lake was completly dry for about 7 years and has filled to capacity over the last couple of years from the now flowing Wimmera River. The countryside is awash with wild flowers, Kangaroos and rabbits, wheat crops are looking very good too.

Without this guy we would not have the competition and stimulus to get the mobile phones and computers we have from the mainstream today.
