Travelling to Queensland this year we took the road less travelled by taking secondary roads West and East of the usual central west route of the Newell highway.
Going North Bendigo - Echuca - Deniliquin - Canargo - Carrathool (between Hay and Narrandera on the Murrumbidgee River) - Hilton - Condobolin - Coonamble - Walgett - Lightning Ridge - Dirranbandi - St George - Toowoomba - Mt Tamborine (Gold Coast QLD)
Returning via a route East of the Newell highway going South but West of the alternative New England Highway up on the Great Dividing Range.
Mt Tamborine - Warwick - Texas - Ashford - Delungra - Bingara - Manila - Gennedah - Coolah - Wellington - Cowra - Canberra - Cooma - Jindabyne - Mt Kosciusko - Alpine Way to Corryong - Albury - Bendigo.
A typical secondary road in NSW. 100 Kmh speed limit and basically the same distance but you get to see some of the beaten track locations.

Even the dirt roads were in good nick. This would be a different proposition in the wet.
