Camping on a property called Beemery between Bourke and Berwarrina on the Kamilaroi Hghway, New South Wales and on the banks of the Barwon River, a source river that is part of the Murray Darling basin and starts in the north west slopes of the great dividing range.

Bourke is considered to represent the edge of the settled agricultural districts and the gateway to the Outback which lies north and west of Bourke. This is reflected in a traditional expression "back o' Bourke", referring to the Outback. The location of the current township of Bourke on a bend in the Darling River is the traditional country of the Ngemba people.

Brewarrina was the location of inter tribal meetings for Indigenous Australians who speak Darling and live in the river basin. Ancient fish traps in the river are heritage listed rock formations that have been estimated at more than 40,000 years old making them the oldest man made structure on the planet.

The Darling River is the third longest river in Australia. Officially the Darling begins between Brewarrina and Bourke, NSW at the confluence of the Culgoa and Barwon rivers that source in the ranges of southern Queensland and northern New South Wales . The Darling runs from just North West of Bourke for approximately 1,500 kilometres to the Murray River at the Victorian border at Wentworth. Early pastoralists used it to send their wool by shallow draft paddle steamer from the river ports of Bourke and Wilcannia to the South Australian railheads at Morgan and Murray Bridge.

Kiewa Valley & Mt Bogong

Mount Bogong in the Alpine National Park, is the highest mountain in Victoria at 1,986 metres. We passed through the pretty Autumn colours of Bright and Mount Beauty to get to our target of Mountain Creek Road that ascends Mt Bogong. Starting out bitumen until the camping area near Moncrief Gap where for the final 12Km or so it turns to a slim muddy track for walkers and 4WD only. With several creek crossings and steep sections you can climb to 1,100 metres where the track ends at Camp Creek Gap. From here its a 4 Km walk the 800 metres or so in altitude to the summit.

Autumn in Bendigo

I did not know that Myers Stores, Chiko Rolls, Leggo's sauces and Sunshine Harvesters all came from Bendigo! And apparently that's not all as the very first Australian produced lager was made by the Cohn family in Bendigo, (later the beer producing part of the company was purchased by Carlton & United Breweries), the Bushmaster all terrain vehicle ( currently in service with the Australian Army, Royal Australian Air Force, Royal Netherlands Army and British Army), Bendigo Pottery (see previouse post here), Four 'n' Twenty Pies, Bendigo Jams (which was taken over by Henry Jones IXL) and Fernwood Fitness Centres. (source: The Weekly Times rural newspaper) There you go?
